Light up Dark Ram or Dark CPU

Posted on May 14, 2012 by a blogger

In order to have Dark RAM/CPU’s lit up, you have to gather some details on them, and send off to the IBM partner (sales) to have them activated. In the case of a “temporary” assignment, you can get it lit up for 30 days (no charge). Otherwise, it would have to be charged and what not, which would then take about 5-7 days.

To get the information, login to the Hardware Management Console (HMC) and

1.        Select Server and Partition.
2.        Select Server Management.
3. Select the server object for which the information is desired.
4. Then either right click the server, or click Selected from the menu.
5. From the on-screen menu, select Manage on Demand Activations > Capacity on Demand > Show Code Information.
6. Click the type of Trial CoD request for which you are collecting server CoD information.

*   standard request for processor
*   exception request for processor
*   standard request for memory
*   exception request for memory

7. Click Next to see the desired information.

In order to activate the RAM, (Step1 )

1.        Select Server and Partition.
2.        Select Server Management.
3. Select the server object for which the information is desired.
4. Right click LPAR (the profile), choose properties, then select memory or processor (depending on requirement)
5.        Change intended settings

The above activation of the RAM/CPU’s will make it available to the LPAR for next reboot. If you require them to now, then you will have to add those resources dynamically.

Like so:

1.        Select Server and Partition.
2.        Select Server Management.
3. Select the server object for which the information is desired.
4. Right click on Partition and choose dynamic logical partitioning
5. Select Memory Resources (or processor resources), then choose Add.
6. Choose desired amounts and hit OK to assign resources
